An Update from the Kentucky Financial Empowerment Commission
KFEC was featured in a magazine in July. The feature was about a research paper written by KFEC Executive Director Matt Frey, KFEC Board Member Dr. Abdullah Al-Bahrani, Dr. Jamie Weathers, and Dr. Nancy Lang. The article discusses which is the best approach to improving financial literacy through a course - a personal finance course or economic education course?
The research we did involved a sample of 127 students enrolled in personal finance and macroeconomic courses. Students financial literacy was measured before and after the course. The main finding of the research is that female students increase through financial literacy most through a personal finance course.
We were really excited to have this article featured in the Smart Women Smart Money (SWSM) Magazine. The magazine is currently celebrating its first birthday. Learn more about the magazine and the Smart Women Smart Money organization here. Also, they are having an end of summer sale online where you can purchase SWSM merchandise.
Something else happening this month is the release of Dr. Al-Bahrani’s series on financial literacy. His first video on Student Debt and Interest rates can be found here, but he will be releasing others soon. The series is geared towards college students. So, if that fits you or someone you know, please share the video. Dr. Al-Bahrani is nationally awarded educator, so his work is guaranteed to be great.
Finally, KFEC is putting together its first webinar for the Kentucky Financial Educators Network. The webinar is on how teachers can meet the Kentucky Department of Education Financial Literacy Standards. Teresa Rogers, who helped write the standards, will be leading the webinar. The presentation will be discussion based so we will have break out sessions.
